There is too much and not enough going on in I Love Dick, which is clearly part of the point. Unfortunately, having certain failings as part of what you're trying to do doesn't keep them from being failings.
James Ponsoldt and Dave Eggers come together to give us their worst efforts, and while Emma Watson and Tom Hanks make some of it watchable, nothing can overcome the thematic beating this hopes will magically become a story.
The franchise has lost its wheel with this one, and it doesn't seem like anyone involved cares. Alleged high-octane thrills are one thing, but sad scripts, ludicrous plot moves, and insulting dialog are another.
Flower, and Deutch, will never get enough eyes on their effort here, and the lack of subtlety makes it easy to dismiss, but this is one of the more thoughtful and entertaining films trying to examine adolescence and adolescents in a while.
