I really have to start off by saying that I’m no expert when it comes to earphones. I’m not even your average person who spends a lot of time listening to music on their smartphone, which wouldn’t matter anyway, because I wouldn’t have a lot of earphones/headphones to compare.
However, I am something of an expert when it comes to watching movies and TV shows on both an iPhone and iPad, and I know when I’m getting good sound. The headphones that Apple packs with its devices are serviceable, but have two serious problems for me – 1) they fall out all the time (a problem supposedly addressed with the newer model) and 2) as far as I can tell they provide workable sound quality at best.
As with everything that can be remotely tied to smartphone and/or tablet ownership, the market is flooded with options, and the headphone market has exploded over the last few years. This includes the emergence of wireless headphones, which have been appreciated globally for their convenience. It can help to read reviews on the best wireless earbuds due to the amount of variation on the market. Sound quality overall has gone through the roof, and while I’m no expert, I’ve experimented a bit with many of the higher end options. The quality is actually dizzying with some headphones. The problem is that a lot of your options that actually give you significant improvement in quality are fantastically expensive.
Bassbuds turn out to be a great option for the vast majority of consumers looking to upgrade their listening experience, because they are a marked jump in quality, offer the features you don’t want to do without, and aren’t in that range of products that really make you pay for a level of upgrade you aren’t actually getting any benefit from.
First off, your Bassbuds come with a selection of tips so that you can get the right fit without having to buy anything else. They also come in a wide variety of colors, so you can show off your personal style.
The included tips are possibly not anything that stands out too much for most buyers, but getting the right fit shouldn’t be overlooked, especially if you’re actually doing something like running. Besides, these are quality tips that make you forget you’re wearing them, and that’s a real plus if you’ve ever had earphones in for a couple of hours that really never managed comfort.
The sound quality is impressive, and while most people would tell you about certain songs/genres, and bass, etc., what impresses me is where audio meets video. With the list of available video content via tablets, smartphones, and just over your computer, growing daily, that’s the area I’m concerned with, and where my questions come from.
The latest episode of your favorite sit-com that you’re catching through Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon might not make a lot of difference to you as you watch it on your smartphone, but movie fans are constantly questioning the potential experience you get streaming something, for example, through your iPad. With the advances the latest tablets offer as far as video quality, your concern there is really the screen size, and you can either deal with that or not, but the sound quality, and its mark on your overall experience is really up for grabs. Sure, some of them have halfway decent speakers now, but they don’t really cut it for a movie experience.
Bassbuds deliver in this area, and for the money, you get a level of quality that may, in my opinion, actually be about as good as its going to get at any price. You know that there is an upper cap on the sound quality you can really benefit from if you’re listening to music as you run, and we’re pushing that cap here as well, even if your sitting in your quiet room watching Avatar. From whispers, to subtle background noise, to the distinction of the score among other sounds, the quality is crystal clear, and comes through at even the lowest volumes.
The test for me is always how well the sound seems to pull you into the screen you’re watching, and among the earbud style options, I haven’t run into anything that really delivers quality that is noticeably better than Bassbuds.
I should mention that one of the big questions consumers are going to have is of the Bassbuds vs. Apple EarPods. After all, if you’re getting enough quality without shelling out extra money, that’s obviously a pretty serious deciding factor. The answer I have there comes down to comfort and Bass. If Apple‘s product is comfortable for you, and you don’t mind, in my opinion, sacrificing a bit of quality at the mid and high levels for what Apple calls “deeper and richer Bass,” then you probably don’t need an upgrade. Apple have some of the best bass headphones and they’re pretty affordable too. I still don’t like the Apple EarPods for comfort (or not falling outness), and Bassbuds win hands down for depth and breadth of quality when watching movies, but for some the differences might not be worth spending any amount of money.
For those who are looking for alternatives, Bassbuds are a great option, and have a lot in their favor over even the priciest models.
