If you’re like me, you raised your eyebrow and scoffed at a certain infomercial that flooded the airwaves not all that long ago with a portable speaker. It wasn’t just that I wondered about the quality of the product, but I wondered what the hell anyone would really want the thing for. Was it a solution without a problem? If I was going to buy a speaker, I would want to spend a bit more for a high-quality experience. A bookshelf speaker like the fluance ai60 was perfect for me and my needs.
Of course, I don’t need any convincing that I am not every demographic, and someone must have wanted them, or they wouldn’t keep airing the thing. But, I’m just not a music junkie, and when I am listening to music, I have too many other options.
As time went on, I found that I did have a use for such a product after all, because I do watch things “portably” quite a bit, and it often involves not having the greatest sound quality. With the variety of Apps out there, I not only watch Netflix on my iPhone, but I can get my cable on my iPad, and throw in Hulu, Amazon, and who knows what else, and the possibilities are endless, and the sound is horrible.
Still, I didn’t consider myself to really be in the market for such a device. Then certain shifts in scheduling meant I was going to do a lot of screening on the go, and after enough hours of being forced into the situation, I really wanted to check out something to give me better sound.
Enter BassBoomz.
The first thing to note here is that we’re in the upper-tier as far as price is concerned. Well, unless you go for some sort of major portable speaker idea that would rule out the size of the unit we’re talking about. This is a speaker for those who are serious about such a product, and have a real, frequent need. You aren’t going to pick this up on a whim.
The unit is exceptionally solid, with surprising heft to it, and when closed isn’t going to leave you with any fear that it will be damaged. Outside of throwing this off a roof, I think you’re safe.
The next thing you’re going to notice is charging and connecting the device. Both are smooth operations, with a USB charger and simple Bluetooth connection to your iPhone, iPad or other device.
Of course, all that really matters is the sound, and it’s impressive. Like I said, I’m only interested in getting decent sound when I’m watching a movie or television, which ultimately isn’t a hard request to fill. Clarity is one thing, and this delivers rich, clear sound, but I don’t need anything to blow the doors down. Thus, the ability to deliver serious volume isn’t something I particularly care about. It isn’t often that you’re looking to fill the room with the sound of the show you’re watching on your phone.
It turns out this one will do it though. Testing out a variety of music, and playing around with the volume quite a bit, I discovered that this one performs impressively at any level. Frankly, I don’t even know how much that plays into the desires of the market, but I wanted to know if I could have a medium volume still penetrate with clarity, and I didn’t have any problems. Naturally, I also put a few things in to crank, just to see what I’d get, and it had no problems with that range either.
For a more in-depth review of what you can expect from music quality, you probably want someone else’s opinion. But, when it comes to watching movies, this met every expectation I had. Like I said, I’m not looking for volume that will blast me, I just want to actually hear, and hear well. You get the full experience with this, even highlighting that ambient noise, giving a full experience. Let’s face it, if you’re watching something on the go, you probably don’t want everyone for a block around to know it.
The only real drawback is the price. So much so that I have to really wonder if it starts to cut into the overall rating. This thing is expensive.
I have a discount code you can use to get $46.00 off through March – BBZ017535 – but without it, I just wonder how broad the market really is. Is it worth it? Actually, it is, assuming you are going to use it on an almost daily basis. But, if you need something once in a while, no, it really isn’t.
Overall, my reaction is best summed up as surprised. I wouldn’t have thought I could get this kind of sound out of something so small. You can even connect two of them for stereo.
