McFarland USA tugs on heartstrings in a largely familiar "sports movie" manner, but it goes about things a little differently. It seems to whitewash things, and delivers emotional plot in simplistic steps, but overall it's surprisingly well made.
There are some movies for younger audiences that show up to change the game, and Minuscule: Valley of the Lost Ants is one of them. The fear is that too many will pass it up because they believe kids won't "do" a silent film, but that would be a mistake. They'll love it.
